Russia has trained generations of Arab engineers and doctors — a deep STEM and medicine tradition, a large government quota for Egypt, and universities in cities built around their students.

Studying in Russia — what to expect

Theory-heavy and old-school in the best sense: attendance matters, oral exams are standard, and the preparatory year of Russian is itself a rite of passage most internationals go through.

Russians don’t perform friendliness — the serious face on the metro is just the default setting. Cross into someone’s trust and you’ll find loyalty, home-cooked feasts and friends for decades.

Dorm life is communal and cheap, winter is an experience you’ll narrate forever, and learning Cyrillic in week one pays off daily. Large Egyptian cohorts mean you’re never starting alone.

What Russia really costs

Tuition: Self-funded at public universities: the official Study in Russia portal’s general estimate is ≈ 250,000 RUB/year, with listed programs running ≈ 135,000–450,000 RUB; MSU-class programs reach 510,000–590,000 RUB. The Russian Government quota (Open Doors / education-in-russia.com) fully waives tuition and adds a monthly academic allowance and reduced dormitory fees.

Proof of funds: No fixed amount — the Cairo embassy’s student-visa checklist asks for the ORIGINAL invitation (приглашение) issued via the Russian migration authority on your university’s request, not a bank statement. An HIV certificate is required: legalized by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry and valid only 3 months.

Student visa: The Alexandria consulate’s printed schedule: EGP 1,295 single-entry (4–20 working days) / EGP 2,590 express — no refund if refused. The Cairo embassy publishes its own fee schedule as a PDF: check it when you book. The invitation comes through the university/state side; the appointment system itself is free.
