Switzerland is a small country with a giant scientific footprint — ETH and EPFL sit among the world’s elite, CERN is next door, and four languages share one spotless train network.

Studying in Switzerland — what to expect

Demanding and selective, with mathematics as the common language: excellence isn’t celebrated, it’s assumed. Research happens in English even where lectures don’t.

The Swiss are precise, private and rule-loving — noise after ten and recycling errors are genuinely noticed. Respect the quiet codes and you’ll be respected back, completely.

Students describe lectures in the morning and Alps in the afternoon, trains timed to the minute, and Sundays so quiet they become sacred study time. It’s expensive — which is exactly why the scholarship math matters here more than anywhere.

What Switzerland really costs

Tuition: Tripled for internationals at the federal schools since autumn 2025: ETH Zurich CHF 2,190/semester (EPFL ≈ CHF 2,240 with fixed fees). University of Geneva still charges everyone CHF 500/semester; typical cantonal range CHF 500–1,000. Note: the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship does NOT cover tuition — and it’s research/PhD only, no bachelor’s or taught master’s.

Proof of funds: No federal figure — each canton decides. The Cairo embassy wants a 6-month bank statement whose closing balance covers at least ONE YEAR of your stay; Canton Zurich’s benchmark is CHF 21,000/year, in the STUDENT’S OWN account at a Swiss-recognised bank — parents’ support letters are not accepted there. A granted scholarship counts instead.

Student visa: The Cairo study-visa checklist says the national D study visa is FREE — while the embassy’s general fee table lists a visa at EGP 5,500. The study-specific checklist governs study applications, but official sources conflict: confirm when you book. The cantonal residence permit after arrival ≈ CHF 182 (Zurich example).
